On next April, 27th (First Sunday after Easter, in Albis), in the magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, the World Premiere of my Missa in Albis, for female 3-voices choir and organ, will be performed by the Aurora Nova Choir from London, directed by Patrick Craig.
This English female choir is renowned as one of the best in Great Britain in its genre. Its director Patrick Craig, who is a counter-tenor in the Tallis Scholars, besides being a great musician is also a delightful person. I came to know him and his choir by means of my friend John Scott, whom I really thank for having made us met.
The Missa I composed (in the movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei) tries to answer a need I felt personally: to combine a truly sacred artistic work with a duration that would allow its practical use in the Sunday liturgies (therefore lasting about 10 minutes). From an artistic point of view the score the very extroversive character of the Gloria, and in some parts of the Sanctus, is balanced by a more intimate and contemplating writing in the Kyrie and in the Agnus Dei. The overall main thought is to express the huge pouring of contrasting emotions (as it happens when we are involved in extraordinary events) directly linked to the excerpt by Mark 16, 1-2 (where also the title of this Missa was also taken from):
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
Finally, the page is dedicated to Patrick Craig and the Aurora Nova Choir, that so enthusiastically encouraged me in finalizing this score and performed the Premiere.

Il 27 aprile prossimo (Prima Domenica dopo Pasqua, In Albis) si terrà, nella magnifica St. Paul’s Cathedral di Londra, la prima esecuzione assoluta della mia Missa in Albis, per coro a tre voci femminili ed organo, ad opera dell’Aurora Nova Choir di Londra diretto da Patrick Craig.
Questo coro femminile inglese è noto per essere tra i migliori del Regno Unito nel suo genere. Ed il suo direttore Patrick Craig, già controtenore dei Tallis Scholars, oltre ad essere un ottimo musicista è anche persona davvero squisita. Sono entrato in contatto con questo organico ed il suo direttore tramite l’amico John Scott, che ringrazio davvero per averci fatto incontrare.
La Messa che ho musicato (nei movimenti: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus ed Agnus Dei) cerca di rispondere ad una esigenza che ho sentito particolarmente mia : coniugare una composizione sacra artistica con una durata che ne consentisse l’impiego pratico nelle liturgie Domenicali (da cui una durata complessiva di circa 10 minuti). Da un punto di vista artistico nella partitura il carattere particolarmente estroverso del Gloria, ed in parte del Sanctus, è bilanciato da una scrittura più intima e meditata nel Kyrie e nell’Agnus Dei. E nel complesso cerca di esprimere quella quantità di sensazioni (le più contrastanti naturalmente, come avviene quando si è coinvolti in fatti straordinari) così strettamente legate al passo di Marco 16 1,2 (da cui nasce anche il titolo di questa messa):
Passato il sabato, Maria di Màgdala, Maria di Giacomo e Salome comprarono oli aromatici per andare a imbalsamare Gesù. Di buon mattino, il primo giorno dopo il sabato, vennero al sepolcro al levar del sole.
